SNAP Eligibility Guide 2026: Everything You Need to Know
Complete guide to SNAP (food stamp) eligibility for 2026, including income limits, application process, and state-specific rules.
What is SNAP?
The Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP), formerly known as food stamps, is the largest federal nutrition assistance program. SNAP provides monthly benefits on an Electronic Benefits Transfer (EBT) card that can be used to purchase food at authorized retailers.
2026 Income Limits
SNAP eligibility is primarily based on your household income relative to the Federal Poverty Level (FPL). For most states, the gross income limit is 130% of the FPL. However, many states use Broad-Based Categorical Eligibility (BBCE) which raises the gross income limit to 200% FPL.
For a household of 4, the 2026 income limits are approximately:
- Standard states: $3,494/month gross income
- BBCE states: $5,375/month gross income
Maximum Benefits by Household Size
The maximum monthly SNAP benefit amounts for federal fiscal year 2026:
- 1 person: $292
- 2 people: $536
- 3 people: $768
- 4 people: $975
- 5 people: $1,158
